25 answersFrequently asked questions.
Everything operators and boards ask about converting, running, powering, financing and funding an electric fleet. Clear answers, from one partner across every step.
How it works
Which terminal tractors can be converted?
Ready Electric is validated for Terberg and similar-platform terminal tractors. The conversion system is designed around the most common port tractor architectures in Europe. Contact our team to confirm compatibility for your specific model and year.
How long does the conversion take?
About four working days per unit, on site. Days 1 to 2: removal of the diesel powertrain and chassis preparation. Day 3: installation of the electric cradle. Day 4: system integration, safety checks and functional testing. The tractor returns to full operation at the end of day 4. Kit lead time is typically two to three months.
Can the conversion be done at our port facility?
Yes, on-site conversion is one of our core advantages. Our mobile technical team travels to your facility with all required equipment, so the machine never goes to a workshop. A standard workshop bay or an equivalent covered working area is all that is needed.
Why convert instead of buying new?
Converting preserves the asset you have already paid for and extends its working life by five to ten years, at a fraction of new-vehicle Capex and without a 12 to 24 month wait. You own tomorrow while protecting today's investment.
Do we have to change how we operate?
No. The platform is engineered into your existing tractor and your existing workflow. Same operation, same operators, electric drivetrain.
Who is responsible across the project?
One partner. Ready Electric by Portunus engineers, finances, powers and manages the transition, so you coordinate a single relationship, not many suppliers.
Should we wait for battery technology to settle?
That is exactly why the platform is modular. We are the bridge that carries you safely now, and the cradle is ready to adopt the next battery chemistry as it matures.
Technical
What is the patented cradle system?
A pre-assembled, modular electrification platform that integrates the battery pack, electric motor, inverter, thermal management and all high-voltage safety systems into a single structural unit. It is engineered to fit directly into the chassis of existing terminal tractors and is protected under Portunus patent filings.
Is the converted machine legally compliant?
Yes. A conversion is treated as a substantial modification, so each machine is re-assessed and re-certified to the EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, EMC 2014/30/EU, LVD 2014/35/EU and relevant harmonised standards. An independent technical assessment confirmed that the high-voltage systems are properly implemented, system integration is technically sound and the vehicle performs as expected. Full documentation is available on request.
What performance can we expect?
Up to 240 kW peak power, 3,200 Nm peak motor torque and up to 310 kWh of battery, sized for real-shift endurance. Fully loaded, it climbs ro-ro ramps with confidence.
What is the battery range and charging time?
The system is configured around your duty cycle: shift-based operation with opportunity charging during breaks. Battery capacity and charging specifications are tailored during the initial assessment. Charging is DC fast charging through a CCS2 (Type-2 Combo) inlet.
Which batteries do you use?
Liquid-cooled lithium iron phosphate (LFP) packs with tier-1 CATL cells, in three configurations from about 198 kWh up to 310 kWh.
What happens to the warranty after conversion?
Ready Electric warrants all conversion components and the electric drivetrain: the cradle for 3 years or 6,000 hours. The CATL battery carries a 5-year warranty, extendable up to 8 years. Service agreements are set in the conversion contract, with remote diagnostics, planned maintenance and on-site support.
What about maintenance and spare parts?
An electric drivetrain has fewer moving parts, so it needs less maintenance: no engine oil, no exhaust system, no transmission service. Components and spares are supported through the European service network.
Energy & charging
Will electrifying overload our grid?
Not with managed energy. On-site battery storage, peak shaving and smart charging let you add electric assets without an expensive grid upgrade.
Do we need solar or battery storage?
Not necessarily, but they help. Solar and storage lower running costs and add resilience, and we size only what pays back for your site.
What is BESS?
A battery energy storage system: the intelligent energy layer beneath your fleet. It buffers demand, caps expensive peaks, reduces grid dependency and keeps charging predictable.
How do you keep charging costs down?
Energy arbitrage, storing power in cheap hours and using it in expensive ones, plus smart charging that avoids peak tariffs.
Finance & funding
What is the payback?
Typically three to five years, driven by up to 60% lower energy cost and around 40% lower maintenance. It varies by country and tariff, so we model yours.
How do we fund it without a large outlay?
Leasing and financing options reduce the upfront capital requirement and turn the switch into predictable, manageable payments.
Purchase, lease or fleet-as-a-service?
All three. We structure the model around your balance sheet and risk appetite, from outright purchase to a fully managed service with maintenance included.
Can financing be combined with grants?
Yes. Ready Finance and Ready Incentives are delivered together, so grants, tax advantages and financing combine into one clear business case.
What public funding is available?
Purchase and retrofit grants, tax deductions, charging and storage grants, toll benefits, and carbon or EU programmes across the European region.
Do you handle the applications?
We act as your advisor. We identify the right national, regional and EU programmes, map the requirements and guide a strong application, which you file through the official channels.
Is insurance available for converted vehicles?
Yes. Third-party liability insurance is available on request, and we support you through underwriting and documentation.
